In the Visible Analyst student edition, users must explode an existing process on a Data Flow Diagram in order to create the child diagram. Once the top level or Context process diagram has been created and saved, right mouse click on the process symbol and choose the "Explode" option. Click the button to create a new diagram, and the new diagram will be opened. Note that all input and output data flows connected to the parent process are dragged down to this new diagram to for model balancing integrity.

Users of the Corporate or Zachman editions are allowed to create and insert new DFD's anywhere in the DFD hierarchy. Explode a process on another diagram and click the Use Existing Diagram button to select the new diagram. Once the diagram is saved, the sub-processes are renumbered based on the parent process number.
